Finding Peace in the Chaos
Some days feel like they never slow down.
Today was one of those days.
It’s after 8:00 tonight, and I’m trying to get both kids settled for bed. Ryder is ready for his quiet time. He’s seeking peace, calm, and the comfort of our bedtime routine.
My daughter, on the other hand, has entirely different plans.
She is full of energy, laughing, climbing all over me, and attempting to play what has somehow become one of her favorite games—WWE wrestling.
Now, before anyone asks…no, we are not a WWE family. We don’t sit around watching wrestling in our house.
But my husband and I both grew up during the era when The Rock seemed larger than life. Somehow, that has turned into our nightly tradition.
It starts with my husband lifting our daughter high into the air while loudly asking,
“Can you smell what The Rock is cooking?”
Without missing a beat, our daughter squeals the words back at the top of her lungs before launching herself into another round of pretend wrestling.
And somehow…
It’s become one of my favorite parts of the evening.
As exhausting as today has been—and it has been exhausting—I find myself overwhelmed with gratitude.
Grateful for the hard.
Grateful for the beautiful.
Grateful for the laughter.
Grateful for the ordinary moments that don’t feel ordinary when you’ve lived through enough difficult ones.
Tonight we all went outside together.
The kids splashed and played in the water. Our son, as always, was completely in his element. There is something about water that calms his soul in a way very few things can.
For a little while…
Everything felt normal.
Not perfect.
Just…normal.
Those moments are incredibly rare for our family.
Most days require careful planning, constant supervision, managing behaviors, preparing for transitions, and adjusting expectations.
But every now and then, we get an evening like this one.
An evening where no one is melting down.
Where laughter fills the backyard.
Where everyone is simply enjoying being together.
Those are the nights I cling to.
They give me a glimpse of the life I sometimes long for.
They remind me that happiness still lives here.
That peace still visits.
That hope hasn’t left us.
As I’m writing this now, Ryder is lying beside me.
He’s gently stroking my hair, absentmindedly twirling it through his fingers the same way another child might hold a favorite blanket or stuffed animal.
It’s one of the ways he shows comfort.
One of the ways he feels safe.
And I don’t take those moments for granted.
I sit as still as I can because I know these quiet expressions of love are precious.
I’ve learned something over the past few years.
Joy and sadness can exist at the same time.
I can have a heart that still grieves the life I once imagined while being completely overwhelmed with love for the life I’m living.
I can cry over the hard moments and still laugh until my stomach hurts when my daughter body-slams her daddy from the couch.
I can carry grief…
And carry gratitude.
Neither one cancels out the other.
Tonight, gratitude is winning.
If today has been heavy for you, I hope you find a few quiet moments before your head hits the pillow.
Take a deep breath.
Notice the small things.
The laughter.
The hugs.
The peaceful silence.
The tiny moments that remind you life is still beautiful, even when it is hard.
Sometimes those little moments are enough to carry us into tomorrow.
To every parent ending another long day, I hope tonight brings you a little peace.
Sleep well.
Tomorrow is a brand new day.
Thank you for spending a few moments here with me.
Until next time…
Keep finding beauty, honesty, and hope—even on the hardest days.
With love,
The Honest Autism Mom
